Bioenergy is the largest source of renewable energy in Europe, – Bioenergy Europe report

22.01.2025
Renewable Energy Sources

In 2022, bioenergy accounted for 54% of Europe’s renewable energy mix. This helped to avoid 300 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

This is stated in the new Bioenergy Europe report, reviewed by the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine.

The report analyzes the role of bioenergy in supporting Europe’s transition to a zero-emission economy by 2050. It also highlights the contribution of bioenergy to decarbonization, energy independence and economic competitiveness.

In particular, bioenergy remains the largest source of renewable energy in Europe. It reduces emissions, creates jobs, strengthens energy security by utilizing local resources, and promotes agricultural development.

In addition, Europe has a unique opportunity to become a leader in renewable technologies: to create 1.5 million jobs and potentially increase EU GDP to 70 billion euros by 2050.

Among the recommendations, the authors of the report mention:

  • Stimulating biotechnology for CO2 sequestration. The EU should develop these technologies to achieve its decarbonization goals and support industries in the transition from a fossil fuel-based economy.
  • Accelerate the modernization of appliances for sustainable heating. Replacing outdated appliances with renewable alternatives will increase energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and lower costs for households and businesses.
  • Ensuring a sustainable supply of biomass. A reliable and sustainable supply of biomass will strengthen Europe’s bioeconomy and support its energy and climate goals.
  • Ensuring regulatory stability. Stable regulation is crucial for attracting investment and stimulating innovation. It can be a major factor in increasing the EU’s competitiveness.
