Canada Commits $100 Million to Nova Scotia Offshore Wind, Eyes U.S. East Coast
Canada is stepping into offshore wind with a $100 million federal commitment to launch the Wind West initiative off Nova Scotia’s coast, according to CleanTechnica. The program’s first practical steps are scheduled for 2027, with $5 million set aside for measurement buoys to gather wind speed data ahead of an investor competition, and $3 million directed to research agency Net Zero Atlantic for submarine cable network design.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson said Nova Scotia’s world-class wind resource and offshore workforce — shaped by the province’s oil and gas industry — give Canada a meaningful edge in what he called a trillion-dollar global offshore wind market.
Nova Scotia is already in talks with Massachusetts over potential electricity exports. The corridor mirrors an existing arrangement: Canadian hydropower reaches New York State via a cable through Lake Champlain, a precedent the new offshore program could build on.
The initiative comes as the U.S. federal government pursues legal action against its own offshore wind sector. The Trump administration is seeking to halt construction of the 65-turbine Revolution Wind project off Connecticut, though earlier court challenges against Atlantic offshore wind development were unsuccessful.
