EU Cross-Border Renewables Roster Reaches 15 With Three New Additions
Europe’s count of officially recognised cross-border renewable energy projects climbed to 15 following the fifth CB RES competition, as three new initiatives secured a status that grants eligibility for CEF Energy funding covering both research and construction phases, alongside strengthened support from EU member states.
The total shifted after project PONTIS left the existing list and three incoming schemes were confirmed. One of those additions brings Ukraine and Romania together under the WIND project, which envisages 650 MW of onshore wind capacity near the Poltava region and is expected to generate around 2 TWh of clean electricity annually.
The second newcomer, DEPLOY, pairs Poland with Germany in a 180 MW integrated scheme combining wind and solar. According to the EU agency CINEA, the project is designed to unlock Polish renewable potential for consumers and industries on both sides of the border as part of broader decarbonisation efforts.
The third addition takes a thermal rather than electrical approach. ZEGA-LINNK builds on a district-heating grid that has connected Braunau in Austria and Simbach in Germany since 2001–2003, adding a new 12–15 MW geothermal well and a 5 MW heat pump to supply the shared network.
The full CB RES roster also includes Liivi Bay Offshore Wind Farm, located in Estonian waters of the Gulf of Riga, and the Utilitas Eleja-Jonišķis Wind Park on the Latvia–Lithuania border, which is on track to reach 200 MW of installed capacity by 2028. The programme remains open to integration with neighbouring countries.
