EU Biomethane Matching Scheme Opens Buyer Applications
The European Commission opened the buyer application window for its biomethane matching mechanism on November 4, with registration running until December 23, 2026. The step marks the beginning of a four-and-a-half-month process that will conclude on March 18, 2027, when matched parties receive each other’s direct contacts.
The mechanism is not an exchange or auction. Established in June 2026 within the bloc’s energy coordination infrastructure, the service is voluntary and free of charge. Its sole function is to connect buyers with suppliers: once the system produces a match, the two sides negotiate all commercial terms — pricing, volumes, delivery conditions — independently and outside the platform.
The three-stage calendar runs as follows:
- November 4 – December 23, 2026: buyer applications detailing fuel requirements
- January 21 – March 4, 2027: supplier interest registration against that declared demand
- March 18, 2027: matching results published, enabling direct negotiations
Alongside the matching round’s launch, the Commission’s energy directorate released a Regulatory Dashboard that allows users to compare national biomethane regulations across member states. At launch, the dashboard covers a selection of EU countries that together represent more than 90 percent of current biomethane production in the bloc, with the aim of making it easier to structure cross-border supply agreements.
