Pledged investment in European biomethane reaches €36 billion
Financial commitments to new renewable-gas projects across Europe have grown by €8 billion in a year, according to the European Biogas Association, which records a rise of nearly thirty percent in planned investment against the previous period.
If every announced project is built, they would add about nine billion cubic metres of new annual capacity by the end of the decade. Europe today runs roughly two thousand operating plants with installed output above 8 billion cubic metres per year.
The number that will matter is conversion: what share of these pledges turns into commissioned plants on schedule. UABIO stresses that moving from investment intent to physical capacity depends on the regulatory conditions in each country, with predictable state policy, simpler permitting and grid access for producers as the key preconditions.
Deploying the capital would support the decarbonisation of industry and transport and trim reliance on imported fossil fuels, while processing organic waste puts existing gas infrastructure to work within a circular-economy logic. Progress remains uneven between countries, however, leaving a large share of the potential unrealised for now.
