INTERVIEW: How the war forced Zhytomyr to completely change its energy strategy

Prior to the full-scale war, Zhytomyr focused primarily on energy conservation and energy efficiency. However, the war forced the city to fundamentally rethink its approach to energy resilience.

Serhiy Kondratiuk, Deputy Mayor of Zhytomyr, discussed this shift in a new episode of 100GREEN.

Previously, municipal programs were aimed mainly at reducing natural gas and electricity consumption, thermal modernization, and improving energy efficiency. But initial attacks on military facilities, followed by strikes targeting civilians and critical infrastructure, demonstrated that the city must focus not only on resource conservation, but also on the resilience and autonomy of its energy system.

This shift in approach is what shapes Zhytomyr’s new energy priorities today.
