Hungary’s Largest Hybrid Plant Goes Live on Pure Market Terms

Solar Markt Group has commissioned a 70 MW solar facility paired with a 40 MW, 80 MWh battery storage system in Hódmezővásárhely, which the developer says is the largest hybrid energy project in Hungary to date.

What makes the plant notable is its financing: no state grants or European Union funds were involved. The project was built and brought online entirely on commercial terms — a contrast with a 450 MW hybrid scheme announced in April that relied on European Bank for Reconstruction and Development support.

Day-to-day energy optimisation will be managed by E.ON’s Hungarian subsidiary, while direct sales to large corporate buyers will run through the Green Cloud Platform trading system. Solar panels were supplied by Risen Energy and the battery systems by Sungrow.

The commissioning contributes to Hungary’s National Energy and Climate Plan targets, which call for raising the renewable share of electricity generation from 18 percent to at least 30 percent before the end of the decade. Installed solar capacity is set to nearly double under the same plan, rising from 7 GW to 12 GW.
