Ireland’s LEAP: data centers from 10 MW must self-generate 80% of their power

Data centers in Ireland now have to cover 80% of their own demand from newly built renewable capacity. Under a scheme called the Large Energy User Action Plan, or LEAP, facilities of 10 MW and above must meet the bulk of their load through new local clean generation and storage.

The government also announced a €18.9 billion package to expand grid infrastructure out to 2030. On the back of it, the country’s total connected solar capacity is expected to pass 3.3 GW by year-end.

The approach reshapes the market. The largest technology firms turn from passive buyers of grid power into direct drivers of new solar and wind build, financing fresh megawatts for their own balance sheets and bypassing the traditional utility tender route.

The practical effect: a company planning a data center of 10 MW or more in Ireland can no longer rely on the existing grid alone, and must secure at least 80% of its energy from new local renewable generation and storage. Whether that translates into real decarbonisation now hinges on how fast operators, and the grid build-out behind them, can actually deliver.
