Ørsted Completes First Large Battery Storage Project in the UK

Danish energy company Ørsted has finished construction of the Iceni battery energy storage system near Norwich in Norfolk, England, marking the company’s first large battery project in the United Kingdom. The 300 MW, 600 MWh facility incorporates 170 Tesla Megapack units installed alongside the onshore infrastructure of the Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm.

Work began in March 2025 and ran for approximately eighteen months. The site was divided into two sections connected by 18 high-voltage cables operating at 33 kV across more than 600 metres. Tesla, Hitachi Energy, and contractor Knights Brown all contributed to the build.

A central engineering challenge was sharing a single grid connection point with the offshore wind farm rather than constructing a separate network node. Project manager Beatrijs d’Euphemia described Iceni as Ørsted’s first large battery project in Britain.

Final electrical work is currently under way, covering cable switching and the initial stage of commissioning tests before the transformer is energised. When fully operational, the installation will provide 300 MW of output and 600 MWh of storage capacity.

Ørsted has pursued similar projects in the United States, where the company launched the Old 300 system earlier this year — a 250 MW, 500 MWh battery installation situated next to a 430 MW solar facility.
