Solar energy is now powering 55 Ukrainian hospitals, with total commissioned rooftop capacity reaching 4.1 megawatts by early October 2026. Each installation combines photovoltaic panels with battery storage systems and related equipment, giving medical facilities reliable autonomous power during blackouts.

The work is coordinated under the “Ray of Hope” initiative, which brings together the European Commission, Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy, and the Ministry of Health. Funding and technical support also flow through the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, overseen by the Energy Community Secretariat.

Germany has contributed the most, financing solar systems at 38 hospitals. Sweden supported 8 facilities, the United Kingdom 5, the European Union 2, and Belgium and Canada one each.

Progress accelerated from early September: the number of equipped hospitals rose from 47 to 55, and total installed solar capacity grew from 3.5 MW to 4.1 MW. A further 128 healthcare projects are at various stages of implementation.
