There are already 76 GW of offshore wind power capacity in the world

On the eve of the opening of WindEnergy Hamburg 2024 (our friends from the UWEA also presented their stand there), Clarksons Research has published a number of data on the offshore wind energy sector.

According to the company’s analysts, there are 76 GW of offshore wind power capacities in operation worldwide, including about 13,800 turbines and 327 wind farms. This is 13% more than last year.

The leader in terms of capacity is China: 37 GW are installed there at 139 wind farms with about 6,500 turbines. The UK is in second place with 15 GW, 48 stations and 2,800 turbines. Germany is in third place (8 GW, 29 stations, 1,600 turbines).

As of 2024, 20 countries have active offshore wind power capacity. By 2035, Clarksons Research expects their number to increase to 32.

According to researchers, the global growth of offshore wind power capacity in 2024 will be 17% (+11.8 GW). And in 2025 – 35% (+29 GW).

By 2035, the active capacity of offshore wind power will reach 450 GW with more than 40,000 turbines worldwide. And by 2050, offshore wind power will account for 7% to 9% of the global energy mix – up from 0.4% today.
