Ukraine’s Fifth Biomethane Exporter Ships First Pipeline Delivery to Hungary

A new plant in Ukraine’s Khmelnytskyi region has completed its first pipeline delivery of biomethane to Hungary, expanding the country’s roster of renewable gas exporters to five.

Teofipilska Energy Company, which commissioned the facility in early 2026, pumped approximately 45,000 cubic meters of purified gas through Ukraine’s main gas transmission system in August. The buyer was Hungarian firm ERU Europe. The company plans to increase supply volumes significantly in September, targeting 200,000 cubic meters for the month.

With an annual capacity of 56 million cubic meters, the Khmelnytskyi plant is currently the largest operating facility of its type in Ukraine and the first to connect directly to the main transmission grid, the Ukrainian Bioenergy Association (UABIO) reported. It runs on livestock waste, beet pulp, and other agricultural biomass.

UABIO said the milestone reflects a broader shift in the domestic industry — from scattered pilot projects toward a more consistent presence on the European market.

Ukrainian producers exported more than 11.2 million cubic meters of biomethane in 2025. Government projections see national production capacity reaching 150 million cubic meters by the end of 2026 and 500 million cubic meters by 2030. The REPowerEU framework targets 35 billion cubic meters of biomethane across Europe annually by the end of the decade, meaning Ukraine’s maximum projected production capacity would amount to roughly 1.4 percent of that figure.
