Ukraine’s Largest Announced Private Battery Project Takes Shape With Chinese Partner
Ukraine’s energy sector is set to gain what has been described as the largest private storage project announced for 2026: a 200 MWh battery system paired with up to 100 MW of new solar capacity, born from a deal between domestic developer Askania Energy and Chinese equipment maker Risen Energy.
The two companies signed a pair of memoranda on 14 August at Risen Energy’s manufacturing facility in China, Forbes Ukraine reported. Under the agreements, Risen Energy will supply photovoltaic modules and energy storage hardware, while Askania Energy takes on project development, engineering, system integration, and ongoing local maintenance.
The partnership’s stated purpose is to build decentralized generation capacity that can strengthen grid resilience after attacks on Ukraine’s power infrastructure and buffer periods of unstable supply. Askania Energy’s leadership noted that combining solar output with battery storage allows electricity to be held and dispatched during peak demand or when grid constraints limit delivery.
Risen Energy has an established footprint in Ukraine: the manufacturer has previously supplied equipment for twelve solar projects in the country, the largest being the 323 MW Pokrovska solar power plant. That prior experience is understood to have helped the company reach a faster decision to engage in new large-scale projects despite active conflict — a move analysts see as reflecting a meaningful shift in how international corporations are weighing war risk in Ukraine.
The Askania Group operates across twelve business lines and reports turnover exceeding 15 billion hryvnias. Risen Energy, for its part, is active in more than 90 countries and specializes in high-power photovoltaic modules. Askania Energy says the venture will also serve to deepen local technical expertise needed for reliable long-term operation under difficult conditions.
