RSE has opened an energy resilience laboratory at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute to train future energy specialists.
Energy Resilience Laboratory Opened at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI)
RSE, a member of Global 100% RE Ukraine, has opened the Energy Resilience Laboratory at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI). This modern educational and research space is designed to train specialists who will work with distributed generation, backup, and autonomous power systems.
The laboratory will provide students with the opportunity to work with advanced energy equipment, study power generation and distribution technologies, and gain practical experience with solutions already deployed at real-world energy facilities across Ukraine.
“Today, Ukraine needs not only new energy capacity but also engineers who know how to operate and manage it. We wanted to create a space where students work not just with abstract models, but with the technologies and challenges energy professionals face on real-world sites every day,” noted Andrii Hrynenko, founder of RSE.
To equip the facility, RSE, in cooperation with MWM (Caterpillar Energy Solutions), supplied modern machinery and software. Key components include an MWM TCG 2016 generator, automation tools, software simulators, and a specialized simulator for practicing power plant grid synchronization.
Through this setup, students will gain hands-on experience in studying the operating principles of modern power systems, general generating equipment performance, system configuration, and grid integration.
From Training Lab to Scalable Experience
In autumn 2025, ten instructors slated to teach at the Energy Resilience Laboratory completed specialized technical training.
With support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the initiative was expanded into a dedicated academic course: “Energy Resilience Systems for Sustainable Power Supply.” The curriculum combines theoretical instruction with practical work directly on the laboratory’s equipment.
The model was intentionally designed for future scalability. The academic course can later be offered to other technical universities and colleges, while the laboratory itself can serve as a practical training hub for students from various regions of Ukraine.
The facility is a modern two-story educational complex spanning 257 m², designed to accommodate up to 20 engineering and energy students simultaneously. The space seamlessly integrates lecture areas with hands-on workspaces housing active energy equipment.
Practical Knowledge for Ukraine’s Energy Resilience
Amid full-scale war, energy autonomy and resilience have become critical for Ukrainian cities, local communities, and critical infrastructure facilities. Consequently, the laboratory focuses on building practical skills in operating modern distributed and backup power supply systems.
At the same time, it is envisioned not only as an educational hub, but also as a platform for engineering R&D that connects academia, business, and local communities — spanning from training a new generation of engineers and testing technology to deploying solutions across critical infrastructure and Ukrainian municipalities.
The goal of the initiative is to establish the laboratory as one of Ukraine’s leading centers for training specialists in power generation, distributed energy resources, and autonomous power systems.
