Ukrainian Banks Commit UAH 68.7 Billion to Energy Restoration in Longest Expansion Run in 15 Years
Ukrainian banks have approved 68.7 billion hryvnias in financing for energy projects, supporting the restoration of 2.115 gigawatts of generation capacity, according to a National Bank of Ukraine survey of the country’s largest financial institutions.
Of the total committed, businesses drew 63.4 billion hryvnias and households 5.3 billion hryvnias under a sectoral memorandum. The gross portfolio of active loans outstanding at the end of September stood at 40.2 billion hryvnias for commercial borrowers and 3.9 billion hryvnias for the residential segment.
Lending spanned a broad mix of technologies — solar, gas, wind, bioenergy and hydropower — across 22 regions. Banks also directed separate credit lines toward industrial battery energy storage systems, inverters, standalone batteries and thermal equipment modernisation, with total capacity across those projects reaching 944 MW.
The NBU noted that the banking sector is now in its longest continuous lending-expansion period for energy restoration in more than 15 years. Regulatory steps have reinforced the trend: the central bank revised credit-risk assessment rules and raised the collateral coefficients applied to energy equipment, allowing banks to assign higher valuations when borrowers pledge such assets against energy project loans.
