Verbund Set to Begin Albania’s First Wind Farm Construction

Austria’s Verbund is moving to construction at Albania’s first wind farm, marking a concrete advance in the country’s renewable energy programme. The company’s subsidiary Verbund Green Power will develop the 72.6 MW Spille project in the Rrogozhina municipality near the Adriatic coast, targeting commercial operations in the first quarter of 2028.

Albania’s Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Enea Karakaçi and Verbund Green Power Managing Director Dietmar Reiner signed a power purchase agreement. The minister confirmed that the developer had obtained a construction permit and satisfied all prior legal requirements, making Spille the first of three wind projects selected at Albania’s inaugural national auction to clear every precondition for breaking ground.

That auction was held in mid-2023 with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Winning bidders received 15-year contracts for difference; total awarded capacity came to 222.5 MW, well above the original tender volume of 100 MW.

Turbines for the Spille site could be supplied by Nordex, with which Verbund Green Power concluded a framework agreement in January 2026 covering potential purchases of up to 700 MW. Albania’s energy ministry regards the launch of the first wind installation as establishing a technical foundation for expanding the country’s wind energy sector.
