New York is launching its first pilot zero-carbon thermal networks. Can a similar model work in Ukraine?

The Global 100 RE Ukraine website has published an article about New York State’s decision to allocate $111.5 million to two pilot heating projects aimed at gradually replacing fossil gas use with modern thermal technologies. One of the projects involves creating a network for residential buildings and a school using low-grade energy from geothermal wells and wastewater. The other integrates a new thermal loop into the existing Buffalo district heating system.

In the new 100GREEN Talks, Eduard Pastushenko, Head of the Heat Pump Association of Ukraine, discusses how promising the transition from individual heat pumps to systemic solutions at the level of buildings, neighborhoods, and entire communities is—and what aspects of this experience can be relevant for Ukraine.

This approach changes the very logic of heat supply: instead of simply replacing one boiler with another, it is possible to create local systems that utilize available heat sources, electrification, and modern thermal infrastructure.

What prospects do such systems have for Ukraine and what is needed to scale them up? Watch the new 100GREEN Talks to find out.
