Hospital in Zaporizhzhia Region Builds Multi-Layer Energy Hub to Operate Through Grid Blackouts

A major medical facility in Zaporizhzhia region is constructing a layered energy autonomy system designed to keep the hospital fully operational even when the city grid goes dark entirely — going well beyond conventional backup generators.

Acting regional governor Mykhailo Semikyn reported on the preparations after inspecting work at the site. According to outlet Spravzhnie, the concept combines distributed solar generation, an independent heat source and standard generators with the necessary fuel reserve.

Three solar power stations are already running on the hospital grounds; a fourth is nearing completion. To guard against failures in district heating, a 3 MW solid-fuel boiler house has been prepared for commissioning.

The centrepiece of the project is four cogeneration units currently being installed alongside purpose-built engineering protection structures. Once operational, the combined cycle will deliver 9.4 MW of electricity and 9.5 MW of heat — enough to power the hospital itself and supply several neighbouring facilities as well.

Separately, three other medical institutions in Zaporizhzhia are undergoing modernisation with financial support from the National Health Service of Ukraine.
