AlphaESS Containers Bound for Lithuania’s 120 MWh Jonava Battery Project
A 120 MWh battery energy storage system is approaching the construction phase in Lithuania, as AlphaESS Aster 5000 containers await shipment to the Jonava site, where installation and connection to 110 kV lines are scheduled. Once energised, the complex will be able to deliver a full 60 MW to the grid for two consecutive hours.
Demand for fast-responding storage in the Baltic states increased after the three countries severed ties with the Russian-controlled power system and joined continental Europe’s synchronous grid in early 2025. Since that integration, local system operators have had to independently cover all categories of frequency reserves.
Jonava is not the first such facility in Lithuania. Developer European Energy connected a 25 MW / 65 MWh storage plant in Anykščiai in spring, and Ignitis is also preparing battery assets for the system services market. The Jonava station is expected to generate revenue through Litgrid frequency reserves and day-ahead arbitrage on Nord Pool.
General contractor UB Solar is integrating the site, combining AlphaESS modules with medium-voltage equipment, bidirectional inverters from Spain’s Power Electronics, and a station controller from Lithuanian firm UAB TSPI to meet Litgrid’s grid code requirements, according to pv Europe.
Lithuania provides financial backing for the sector through grants covering up to 30% of capital expenditure for battery systems rated between 15 and 150 MW that participate in balancing services.
