Masdar Agrees to Buy a 550 MW-Plus Greek Solar Plant and Signs Green Data-Centre Memorandum
Abu Dhabi’s Masdar has struck a deal to purchase a nearly complete solar facility of more than 550 MW in Greece from Lightsource bp, in a transaction announced during the visit of Abu Dhabi’s crown prince to the country. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the deal remains subject to regulatory clearance before closing.
Once commissioned — expected before year-end — the plant will supply electricity to more than 200,000 Greek households. Leaving Turkey aside, it is set to be the second-largest such plant in Europe, marginally ahead of a 550 MW project that state utility PPC Group recently brought online in Western Macedonia. The facility includes two private substations to connect to the transmission grid, with battery storage additions planned at a later stage.
The acquisition marks the first large-scale transaction that Masdar has executed through Terna Energy, the company it took over in 2024 in a deal that valued the company at €3.2 billion. Terna Energy now operates under a €5.5 billion investment plan targeting a 6 GW portfolio by 2030.
Alongside the solar deal, Masdar signed a separate memorandum with Khazna Data Centers — the largest data-center operator in the MENA region — to develop green data centers and digital infrastructure in Greece. Masdar Chairman Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said the collaboration is designed to pair clean-energy capacity with digital capacity, against the backdrop of developing artificial-intelligence technology.
Completion of the Lightsource bp transaction is contingent on receiving the required regulatory approvals and the satisfaction of standard closing conditions.
