Poland’s Solar Pipeline Swells to 40 GW, But the Grid Can’t Keep Up
Poland has 6,450 solar projects holding valid grid-connection approvals, with a combined queued capacity of 40.6 GW — nearly double the country’s 21.8 GW of installed solar power. August data from the Warsaw-based Instytut Energetyki Odnawialnej (IEO) puts a sharp edge on a paradox facing Central Europe’s fastest-growing solar market: a massive development pipeline does not translate into built capacity when network infrastructure falls short.
The project count actually fell from 7,703 at year-end, but IEO cautions against reading that as a slowdown. The institute tightened its methodology, removing projects whose connection conditions are more than two years old and whose contracts exceed four years. Once inactive entries were stripped out, aggregate queued capacity rose by over 7 GW — meaning the active pipeline is larger and more credible than before.
The data nonetheless highlight a cluster of structural bottlenecks:
- congestion at existing grid connection nodes;
- access constraints for utility-scale solar facilities;
- rising curtailment volumes as the system struggles to absorb renewable output.
SolarPower Europe points to the same pressures at the continental level, flagging permitting delays, weakening policy backing, and an insufficient flexibility market as the main brakes on European renewables deployment.
For Poland specifically, the oversized queue raises the prospect of intense competition at future renewable auctions — if they materialise. No official schedule from the URE energy regulator has been announced for 2026–2027, leaving developers in a holding pattern even as the grid connection backlog continues to grow.
