An auction to support the construction of new renewable energy facilities, the so-called Green Auction, may take place this year, said Andriy Gerus, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Energy Committee.

This was reported by Energoreforma.

“There is information from the Ministry of Energy that they want to hold an auction for the first 100 MW of new renewable energy capacity this year,” Gerus said during the IV Conference on Energy Law, held in Kyiv on Friday, July 5.

“We want to start the auctions to support renewable energy, which was envisaged in the legislation back in 2018,” he said.

He noted that the committee is currently working out whether any changes to the legal framework are needed in this direction.

Speaking at the conference, Oleksandr Martyniuk, Chief Renewable Energy Expert at the USAID Energy Security Project, suggested that such auctions would take place in the fall.

“Pilot projects for small capacity are likely to take place in the fall. We need to show that they work. The Ministry of Energy has such an initiative, and we are involved in it,” he said.

In addition, according to Martyniuk, the register of guarantees of energy origin will be ready next week, and in early August, stakeholders will be trained on how to use it.
