Renault and EDF to Bundle V2G Home Service From 2027
Renault Group and French utility EDF have agreed to launch a combined vehicle-to-grid home service in the summer of 2027, targeting private customers who drive Renault, Alpine or Dacia electric vehicles.
The package will pair the car with a bidirectional home charger installed by EDF’s IZI service unit, and a software layer run by Dreev — the EDF-Nuvve charging platform company — that schedules when the battery draws power from the grid and when it feeds electricity back.
The underlying V2G technology is not new; bidirectional inverters and vehicle-grid communication protocols have been tested in pilot schemes for years. According to pv magazine, the harder problem was assembling a commercially viable bundle: confirmed vehicle compatibility, a manufacturer warranty covering bidirectional use, and the right charger hardware — all in one offer.
The broader stakes scale with fleet size. A large enough pool of coordinated EV batteries can serve as a meaningful grid-flexibility resource alongside stationary storage. Without coordination, the same batteries tend to amplify evening demand peaks rather than buffer them.
How much this service ultimately moves the needle will depend on how quickly households enrol, how network tariffs are structured, and how generously customers are compensated for making their battery capacity available as a flexibility reserve.
