Electric Fire Bricks Move from MIT Labs into Global Cement Production
A technology that originated in MIT research has crossed from the laboratory into one of the world’s largest cement producers. Electrified Thermal Solutions announced that two Joule Hive thermal battery units are now in place at a Holcim facility, with an evaluation phase ahead — a milestone that adds the cement giant as ETS’s third global industrial partner.
The Joule Hive system heats industrial processes to 1,800 degrees Celsius using electricity rather than combustion. Its fire bricks conduct current through a modified chemical structure with higher metal oxide content, producing intense heat without any gas flame. Before the Holcim project, a commercial demonstration unit in San Antonio had accumulated more than 1,000 operating hours, validating the technology at scale.
The cement sector accounts for roughly 8 percent of global carbon emissions, and electrifying its kilns is widely seen as the most direct path to cutting those emissions. The Holcim deployment is designed to test whether that path is commercially viable.
A parallel project in Kentucky is already quantifying the gains. Ashland has received a US Department of Energy grant of up to $35 million to deploy Joule Hive batteries at the ISP Chemicals plant, replacing methane boilers used for steam generation. Projected emission reductions there reach 70 percent.
Taken together, the two deployments suggest that a significant portion of global industrial output can be electrified without sacrificing process efficiency — a case that heavy industry has long resisted making.
