Project: “Green Industrial Recovery Project for Ukraine” (UNIDO Green Industrial Recovery Project for Ukraine)

Project Overview

Despite the challenges of war and the destruction of energy infrastructure, Ukraine is launching the international “Green Industrial Recovery Project” in cooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and private Japanese companies.

The goal of the project is to support the sustainable recovery of Ukrainian industry and the development of green energy through the implementation of advanced technologies in the fields of biomethane and CO₂ utilization (CCU).

Project Objectives and Tasks

  • Harness the untapped potential of biomass for biomethane production through anaerobic digestion.

  • Introduce CO₂ capture and utilization technologies generated during biomethane purification.

  • Develop a business model for the growth of Ukraine’s domestic green industry, biomethane exports to the EU, and integration into the European energy market.

  • Attract investments into the recovery of Ukraine’s energy sector through international partnerships.

  • Build a resilient, decentralized, and decarbonized energy system.

Expected Impact

  • Increase biomethane production to 20 billion m³ annually by 2050.

  • Use biomethane as a substitute for natural gas and boost the domestic renewable energy market.

  • Strengthen Ukraine’s energy security and independence.

  • Advance “green” CO₂ technologies as a new resource for industry.

  • Elevate Ukraine’s role in the European and global energy transition.

Project Tasks (Stages)

  • Conduct feasibility and techno-economic studies on biomass utilization and CCU implementation.
  • Develop a business model and pilot projects for biomethane production and supply.
  • Test flexible operation scenarios for bioenergy plants.
  • Prepare proposals for integrating results into EU–Ukraine strategies.
  • Disseminate outcomes and scale up the project at the level of industrial clusters and local communities.

Project Partners

  • UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) – Coordinator.

  • Solution Creators Inc. (Japan) – Technology Partner.

  • Kyushu University (Japan) – Academic Partner.

  • CYTOK GmbH, RE:CS Holdings (Japan) – Industrial and technology partners.

  • Global 100% RE Ukraine – Renewable energy advocacy partner.

  • Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABIO) – Expert partner.

  • MHP Eco Energy – Business partner in bioenergy production.

Financing

The project is implemented with the support of UNIDO and private Japanese companies.

Funding is directed towards:

  • the development of biogas and biomethane facilities;

  • the deployment of CO₂ capture and utilization technologies;

  • the creation of a business model and scaling of solutions;

  • strengthening international cooperation in the field of green energy.

Biomethane production from biomass is only the starting point. An equally important task is CO₂ capture and utilization (CCU). This makes it possible to simultaneously produce renewable gas and use “green” CO₂ generated during biomethane purification.

Over the next five years, Global 100% RE Ukraine, in consortium with the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABIO), MHP Eco Energy, Japanese companies Solution Creators Inc., CYTOK GmbH, RE:CS Holdings, and Kyushu University (Japan), will focus on this area within the framework of the UNIDO Green Industrial Recovery Project for Ukraine.

The initiative’s aim is to create a business model that combines biomethane production, exports to the EU, and the development of a domestic green industry, while also fostering Ukraine’s integration into European energy markets.
